welcome back to all free crochet . comfor more free patterns and ideas please check out our free crochet.com. i'm your host michael sellick known as mikey from the crochet crowd. it willbe teaching you how to do the crocodile stitch and today we're going to beworking with the lion brand amazing yarn line and this is the project that we'regoing to go for so let's get started i want to show yousome inside tips on being able to start this project so that you can maintainthe crocodile scales in a even manner so let's get started on this tutorialwas starting with this project we want

to keep everything in groups of six some people say to do three but if youget the wrong count in three you're going to end up with the scale so you'll end up with like this and thisone will be missing and then you'll have a coming in like this so what happens is that you don't havebalance on both sides so we need to keep this in groups of six because there'sthree stitches between here and here here and here and here and here so together by keeping them groups ofsix you'll end up with an even number on

the one row and then odd even odd evenso now let's get started today we're using a size j crochet hook today usingthe lion brand amazing yarn this is called glacier bay this color and todayis going to be amazing day teaching you how to do the crocodile stitch and like aturkey i've already switched my yarn out without even telling you i'm going to beusing instead of that i'm going to be using mana lo and this is still amazingand look at these colors blues so now let's get started again a sizej-hook we're going to start off with the slip knot we just wrapped around my finger twiceback your hand forward

take the back over the forward kick anew back one up and over and insert your hook so as i told you we need to keepeverything in groups of six so this never counts as one so one twothree four five and six so there's one group 1 2 3 4 5 & 6 the second one two three four five andsix so if you wanted to do any furtherprojects at any other kind of like just keep it in group 6 and just keepcounting like that as you go so if you wanted to do an afghan you know babythrow you something for the living room

just keep on going so this is where wewant to start off right down here at the bottom so i want to just a pinch it downthere or here and i want you to chain up 3 so 1 2 & 3 now where you're pinching is going to beyour first stitch and i just want you to double crochet so wrapping going in andwe need to always make sure on this project that two double crochets alwayswork together the chain obviously counts as one in the rules of crochet so weactually have to there i now want to chain two one and two andi want you to skip two on the path down here so 1 and 2 we're skipping going to thethird and i want you to put two double

crochets into that third it's easier if i just kind of put myfinger over top here and just guide it in that way so just getting in thisfingers holding it so it doesn't rotate around its kind of harder to do with ifyou don't do that and then double crochet is normal and again it just kindof holding it you just have to do it for the beginningline to do that so you want to put two double crochetsand this is actually going to be the center of your scales this is one centerthis is another so it's now chain two - 1 and 2 again skipping over two at the bottomgoing to the third again holding it

we're going to put two double crochetsin there as well let's try that again just kind ofholding it on the hook and the reason why this is happening is because whenyou chained like you are jumping stitches stretch in the beginning thatchain tents to wrap around the hook in correctly so two double crochets intothat ok and make sure the yarn is not tangledand chaining - 2 one and two so are you starting to see the pattern hereyou're going to skip two in the bottom again i'm going to hold that and go tothe third one over for two double crochets

ok again chain 2 1 and 2 and skipping tothe third one going to hold it ok and i want to skip again 1 & 2 in the3rd so hopefully you're seeing the patternbecause you can do this all the way along and then the final is going to beon the very end so one and two and we make sure that we put two doublecrochets and on the very end as well because we always have to have to doublecrochet is working together and i'll show you why that is in just a few seconds so this one andtwo so that is the foundation line to geteverything started

and this is where we are so this is whatit's going to look like kind of like a train track and i'm going to show youwhat we're going to do next so stay with me just for a second. so by keeping it in groups of six what'sgoing to happen now is that there's going to be a scale here in the endwe're going to skip one another scale here skip one another scale here skip one andthen there's going to be another scale on the outside so that means that it'sgoing to be in balance and when you look at it there should be an odd number so 12 3 4 5 6 7 in order to make that

possible so it's just rotate this in our handlet's turn it and you can see how it just turned it i kind of turned it in aweird way but i want you to see it here i want youto chain 3 so 1 2 and 3 and the crocodiles digital is not about workingon the top of this layer it's actually but working on these posts that are inbetween this is the foundation so coming inwrapping ok and we want to come in from this postor do you just want to turn the material so that it's easiest to excess ouraccess and we're going to double crochet

into the post only and we're going to dothat four times the chaining of three counts as one so in actual fact is technically five ifyou're being very technical today just going to stabilize my yarn off camerahere so we just got that so we just did our for i want to chain one and now iwant to turn this around ok and we want to get this other one nowthat's in front we're working our way toward this so this is how we started so we'veactually come down the post and now we're going to come up the other side sothis is how it works with with a

crocodile stitch we go down one post wego up the other and then we go down we go up the otherso now let's go up the other side so we're going to wrap and we want to comein from the post from this side going toward the center of the scale and weand i'm just going to pinch it like this so it's all together so i don't have toreally think much about it so pinch it so it's kind of like up inthe air and we want to double crochet five times love these colors so now that we're got there are five intheir scales actually technically done we just have to chain one and you canjust fold it back towards you

you can see that it's starting to takeshape so the next one in behind is right here but we're going to skip that ok that is for the ones that are in thecenter for the next row up so we're going to skip that and just immediatelyjump over so let's wrap our material in aimmediately double crochet into the next section there and again we're going todo five so we're just going 5 into the post andwe're working our way down towards the bottom of the scale so it takes fivedouble crochets to go down once you're in the bottom two chain one so its chainone we're going to turn it and we're now

going to grab the next post that you seeright here and we're going to chain up we're going to sorry double crochet upfive up the other side ok that was four and five and now i wantto chain one so every time you at the top you need to chain one ok so there's the next scale done yousee how amazing that's turning out books and just lost my chain one let me makesure i get that back in so we like before we want to skip the next one herethis is where we just were we want to skip this one and immediatelygo and start making the next scale so if you think that you've mastered thecrocodile stitch so far

i'm going down with five double crochetis what i'm talking to you i'm is that there's two lines of crocodile stitching there's this line and then there's thefoundation line which we are going to do next and the foundation line is whereeverything is basically operating on so in order to do the scale you have tohave your foundation at first so now down to bottom chain one turn andlet's get the next one right beside it and we're going to double crochet upalong the post five man i love this yarn i've only ever seen it onlineso to have this yarn is amazing so now we're done and we want to chainone and immediately we're going to jump

over to the final here that we have soit's the final because you're skipping over 1 so we're going to jump over thefirst one of the the group of two double crochet down 50 were actually on theedge now coming up so it's for and five so we're down at the bottom nowchain 1 let's flip it you got to make sureyou'll be very careful here where your project is working ok so it is going to be very carefulyou're getting up the right stitches so that was kind of twisting ok so we want to make sure we actuallyunderstand that were not twisting up

that chain so we're going to crochet now up five iknow that sounds kind of confusing but when you're first starting on it this chain loves to twist around becauseof the way that you're operating on the post so you just gotta be a littlecareful about that so now we have just now chained up okand now what i will need you to do is that i need you to slip stitch so we'rejust going to come into the center this is where its coming down so we'reactually on the very end ok we're going to come down and we're just going to goright into the center for slip stitch so just

grab the material through and throughand that are completely line so this is the back side of your your crocodilestitch and this is the front side so now we're going to work our way upthe next level and we need to create the foundation first and then fill in thatthe stitches are the scales that are in between each one of these so let's do that next now moving up thelayers it's actually really simple they're really simple every time you endup in the middle of a scale you're going to put two double crochetshere to see you hurry up to here you want to put two double crochets in thereas well so the middle two middle

- so let's let's try this so let'simmediately chained up 3 so 1 2 and 3 and like we did when we first startedhow there's in groups of two we need to maintain that so we need todouble crochet again right into the and one there so there's your group of two we immediately need to chain two like wedid in the very beginning and then we have to come down in between these twohere now you'll notice that they're nottogether because they're two different lines but i want you to sandwich it i want you to double crochet go inbetween that right there

and through the front underneath where the scales are joining together okand i want to double crochet two times so again into the same spot so what whatwhat that's doing now is that it's trapping the scale now to the other line that you seeunderneath it's it's holding it together so that was chained two one and two we're going to go immediately to themiddle of this of the scale for two double crochets and then we're going tochain two one and two ok and so we're back again in the groupof two so just go down in between and

then go make sure on this side thatyou're putting the scale above it so that it's trapping it into position i'm going to make sure you doublecrochet when you do that you can kind of feel that around with your finger so ifyou're a good crochet or you can probably feel that back there where it is ok and now chained to one and two so you can see this line is a no-brainerthe other lines really a no-brainer either it's just a matter of generalwork ok and so we only have we have two moreleft

so one and two and we want to reach inbetween again and making sure that the layer is on the top of the hook we're going to put two in there and thenchained to one and two and then finally the last two are going to go right intothe center of the final scale there's nowhere to go other than there so one and two so hopefully you've seenthat see how you just maintain exactly how you started before and the reasonwhy can't see the one under before because it's been buried in the scale and nowwe're going to work on the next level going up

finally let's turn this again and nowwe're ready to make the scales that are in between the other two scales so how we start immediately as we justchain one and we reach to this one over here we just totally leave this aloneand we reach and we go into the first one only from the side ok we don't ever going through the top over during these scales and just bendthe material so it's easier to and just pinch it so it's easier to work with you're goingto want to do five double crochets going

down and if you remember what you got to doat the bottom you just got a chain one so we chain one and now we're just goingto turn this material and we're going to get the next one that's right decided tosit there and we're going to come in from the this side so that the hook isgoing toward the center of the scale and we're going to chain up we're going to double crochet 5 2 3 4and 5 and so like before you remember what we did when we got to the top wechange one and this time we're reaching over to here so we're bypassing thescale here and we're reaching and we're

just coming into system to the post fromthe side and again five double crochets so the way that this scarf is workingthat i got if you want to follow the exact thing that i'm doing right now isthat every other line every over the line there four scales on one andthree on the next so it's not a lot of work involved soyou got going 5 i'm going to chain one at the bottom you're going to just turnit and do the other post that's directly beside it again making sure you're goingtoward the center of the scale or change or double crocheting up five i don't understand what i'm sayingchaining up five and i'm double crochet

up five okay we've got our five in so now thatwe're back at the top look at the accenting of that is not justgorgeous so changing one and now i want to reach again i want to bypass this oneand reach ok and we're doing the very last scaleall ready for this particular line so there's only three scales on this line so we're double crocheting five goingdown ok we are chaining one at the bottom turning it and we're going to get thenext one going up

and we're going to double crochet upfive ok and now we're going to chain onebecause that's what we're supposed to do when we get to the top and this timeinstead of just continuing to go all we just need to do now is that we need toslip stitch okay so we just need to slip stitch itto the to the middle of the section here ok just slip it just little bit ok just slip it in like that and whatthat does is it holds the scale to the end down and now we're ready to turn andmove up another level so it's now turn your material and again this is likewe've already done so you're going to

notice always in one direction we'realways putting the foundation and then we're coming back were always doing thescales so we're now right in between the scales because that's where r in betweenthe post remember everything is in groups of twoso we're now just going to chain up 3 so 1 2 & 3 we're going to put another one right inbetween ok it's to see how it's in between the they're right in between ok we're now going to chain two one andtwo the next one is a scale so we're goingto go right in between the scale

ok we're going to chain two the next oneis just like we've seen before double crochet going in and we make surethat the other side that it's on top of the hook so that traps it and stabilizesthat into position ok chaining two one and two and thenwe're right in between the scale again ok chaining two- and now we're right in between again ok making sure that the back is on top andif your seasoned crocheters i mentioned before you can probably feel that aroundwith your fingers and you can actually play physically see it as well

one and two ok so we're in between themiddle of the scale there and make sure you're being it pay attention see where this one is thisis what your matching so if you stop here you're going to end up going on atriangle so you got to make sure you get that final one for putting two doublecrochets and don't forget that and that would complete that line so we get avery simple process so now let's turn it i'm going to showyou again one more time and we'll call this tutorial quits for today so we'reright on the very end so we're just going to chain up 3 so 1 2and 3 and we're now doing the scales

because the foundation row is already inplace and we wrap and we come in from the first one from the side and againyou just want to turn your material so it's easier easiest to access and thatchanging of three counts as one double crochet so therefore the first one thatwill only get four going down the post and we're changing one at the bottom andthen we're just turning the material and we're getting the other side so wrapping we're going into the post on the otherside and we'll change our double crocheting up five on this post three

four and five and i was at the tops five and then once we're at the topwe're going to chain one and now i want you to skip over this one because we'renow working in between and we're going to go to this one over here and we'rejust going to immediately double crochet so just coming into the post on theside and again it's a five going down chain one of the bottom five going upand almost remembering that like it's an elevator going down thought of goingback up five so changing one at the bottom

we're going to turn it and we're goingto get the other side while this yarn is gorgeous no i love this yarn and said that beforei love this yarn to mention i love this yarn. i love this yarn we've got three fourand five we're going to now chain 1 ok and we're going to skip over to themiddle skip over this one going over there just to the side of the post again so if you're but finishing this projecta project where would you finish it you

would not go finish it doing on afoundation row if whenever you're finished and ready to finish the projectyou'll finish it right on this particular line ok so you always finish it when you'refinishing up the scales because that foundation would stick upout of your project as you can imagine so you don't want that so we chained oneat the bottom and now we're ready to come up the other side for five doublecrochets ok and then we're going to chain one andthen finally at the end you can tell that we have the end because if you'relooking at it now because you have the

scales are now starting to really comeinto position you've got to get this final one there so we're going to reachover and we just got two more posts to go so we just got into your five goingdown so it's actually a really simple processum it's been something i've been kind of avoiding to learning and then i finallyjust gotta hang of it like actually like the stitch to be honest with you ididn't think i would but i do and i didn't think i would because i thoughtit might have been too complicated for me and i'm a very visual learner so ithought you know that's just going to tough but i like the catherine wheelstitches my favorite so this makes sense

that this is a another favorite of minecoming up so i come up now five and we are now finished but in order to befinished i have to make sure that i just slipstitch so i'm just going to come into the center and slip just like that andso you're now ready to move up so that's how you do the crocodilestitch so if i was to be done this project this is where i would finishnever finish on a foundation row and look at this isn't that amazing you're going to have the most amazingscarf ever and again we're using the lion brand yarn and this is calledamazing byline brand and it really truly
