like an intermediate track in turns one andtwo. >> much different feel between one and twoand three and four, no doubt. >> ryan newman now up to sixth.>> martin truex jr. after a penalty on pit road was up front, had to go back down pitroad and pass through penalty. they took advantage of it. filled it full of fuel. now the mostfuel and the precious tires on the track are working for martin truex jr. aj allmendingerhas been checked and released from the infield care center. brad keselowski with a three-secondlead over kenseth. >> i'm not willing to say that, rick. he'srunin the 19 of carl edwards in front of martin truex jr. this is what they had to say onthe radio.
>> everybody make it in?>> no. >> we're going to make it.>> we're going to make it. let me tell you something. here's the problem with that. youmentioned it, steve. we had the fast car on the racetrack in truex. he stayed a littlelonger, filled her all the way through with fume. he's going to push the issue. he's goingto make it where these guys can't ride and try to run them out of fuel.>> i think he's just going to pass them on the racetrack.>> kelli? >> aj allmendinger was just released but youwere in there for quite some time. you came out with your left wrist wrapped. how areyou?
>> just trying to get some sympathy pointsnow. i'm fine. hurts a little bit. figure out. we'll get it x-rayed later and see whatthe exact diagnosis is, but i said i wouldn't having a lot of fun before. i'm definitelynot having a lot of fun right now. so guys try to get the car back together. i don'tknow if we blew a tire or what. the hood came up. a big hit. i feel a little bit old.>> thanks, a.j. >> we've been talking a little bit of strategy.let's talk a little more as we're under 43 to go. brought to you by smithfield foods.>> really, the key all race long restart, being efficient somehow. efficiency, jeff, whether you come down pit road, how much fuel to survive this very tough racetrack?>> that's been the hard part. surviving the
racetrack has been difficult for everybody.>> i checked in and asked how do you feel about the fuel situation. he said no, justlet them go because right now he's so fast i think he can get his way to the front. they'reburning so much fuel, he hasn't saved any this run. he needs-time him to save some. do you holdhim back or do you let him go and try to get to the front on his own?>> no. you let him go. i don't think they're racing against anyone on the fuel strategy.>> and the cost comes out, you want to be in as good track condition as you have.>> want to take our last green flag break. .>>> welcome back. just 32 laps to go in the
nascar sprint cup series race presented bykfc. under the lights at kentucky speedway. repaved and reconfiguration, got some greatracing tonight. next week nascar is on nbcsn from loudoun, new hampshire. saturday it willbe the xfinity series coverage beginning at 3 3: 30 sunday.>> martin truex continuing to reel in cars. now he's on the back bumper of kevin harvick.>> you see at the top of your screen, this last pit, martin truex jr. 38, two laps morefuel than the leader because he had that penalty, came down pit road and serviced the cash.i was confused. when you're serviced by a penalty, if it's not -- a passing penalties, you're not allowed to pit. that gained him the opportunity to come back in a second time.so that's the little dethalg the crew chief
has to understand. if it wasn't a passingpenalty, come down, gets the left side tires. a great job coming through the field.>> again, we see the 4 of kevin harvick slide up the racetrack. that openings the door forthe 78 of martin truex jr. >> truex is definitely where he needs to be.kevin has no choice. 78 coming through the field, i don't think i've seen a car comeup through the field like in a long time. he took it from way in the back. he has madea on the of time up. this is exceptionally impressive.>> he was over six seconds behind the race leader. now inside five seconds of the raceleader brad keselowski. >> where he started, he had to pass good cars.it's a lot different passing towards in 30th.
he's been passing quality cars to get here. >> fuel strategy being discussed by almostevery team. here's what the 4 had to say. >> we're about three short. there's about26 laps. letting off early just to save two laps. it would be really hard to save three.>> what he just said was to save two laps, it's going to take 26 laps, so if you waituntil your driver with 27 to go, hey, you got to save two laps and he starts to startsaving right now. that's what he was telling kevin. so that -- they seem really smart atsaving fuel. they know how much fuel they can save at what pace and that's what reallymatters. kelli? >> i haven't heard much from the two teamson saving fuel. i just checked in with the
teamaged they're saying they think they'rejust a little bit short. >> the 20 team has had a lot of conversationsabout saving the fuel. here was the conversation moments ago.>> to save, i think should we lose a lot. >> do what you can but stay after it for now.>> i think i can -- >> just told matt kenseth right now accordingto our calculations, you're skbr than the 2 car on fuel. still, they're doubtful theycan go the distance. >> i wonder if his team nate kyle busch mightbe managing it himself. he wasn't instructed to do that.>> don't need to save anything. give me all you got.>> so they expect to be on pit road for fuel,
but sometimes, guys, they can work off theirown and what kyle sees, he can respond to. maybe he's saving. marty?>> carl edwards is in the sixth position. he said on the radio a moment ago, hey, isaved you lots of fuel. he said i need at least two more. i need you to be real aggressive. a lot of drivers backing it down hoping theycan make it to the edged. >> i think that is the best strategy. the78's already gone by. the only way the 19 is going to win the race is if the 78 runsout of gas assuming it goes green. we've seen them stretch a fuel tank before. he's verygood at it. there's a lot of throw. these mile and a half tracks, ice ladder to savefuel. it's not like a road course. it's hard
to save at these big mile and a half tracks.>> for probably the last 20 laps, the 78 of martin truex jr. has been the fastest caron the track until that last lachlt austin dillon was the fastest car and martin truexjr. wasn't even in the top five. now maybe martin truex is starting to think about afuel issue, but he doesn't have that luxury. he's still four seconds behind brad keselowski.matt kenseth, three and a half seconds behinds brad keselowski. so now it becomes not who'sthe fastest but who's the smartest at conserving fuel with 22 laps to go.>> we just heard it's going to take 26 laps to save fuel to get two laps. right? we justheard that what does that mean nor martin truex? that two-lap thing is looming reallylarge at the moment.
>> any way you got it, three miles -- theyhave three miles more gas than any other car. >> he can push the issue, make everybody elserun faster than they want and then save fuel later. that's the advantage. he can push harderwronger -- longer, save fuel later. again, when you're martin truex jr. and his teamand you won a race already, you want to get as many tops as you can and hope you get acaution. he's gained all these spots. he can win the race if the caution comes out or ifit doesn't. having a fast car and pushing the issue putshim in position to possibly win the race. >> jeff, there's not been one word on theradio ability fuel in this run at all. he hasn't mentioned fuel at all. he's lettingmartin completely go, steve. that's a strategy
as well. you only bring fuel into the equationif focused on the front. >> the rare opportunity you have as the crewchief to take the car that can drive from the back of the pack all the way to the front-mile-an-hour,no surprise martin truex is number one, almost a half a mile an hour faster than mats matt.if you have a car that can drive from the back to the front, i don't want to see youconserving fume. prove to the world how fast you can run. make a statement, even if itisn't in victory lane. >> if he can get by kenseth and you only have15 laps to go, you make it. i mean, can you actually catch him? at that point i thinkyou do start saving fuel just enough to keep the 20 behind you in case the 2 car runs outof fuel. in three seconds and 15 laps, i don't
think you'll make that much up. you have tohope he runs out of fuel, but when you get in front of the 20, you can't let him backaround you. >> and it was martin truex who marched throughthe field until he got to the 20 of matt kenseth. now he hasn't been able to reel in mtt kenseth.the 18 of kyle busch has decided to come to pit road with just 17 laps to go. dave.>> rick, you can tell he needed to come in and film it soon or be very difficult to getit restarted if it ran out completely. the car is underpower. >> he's got to go 16 laps. kevin harvick'sgoing to do the same thing. harvick on pit road as well. a lot of teams not thinkingthey're going to make it all the way. decision
come to pit road for the 4 team. dave?>> we heard them talk about the fact that the amount of time they needed to save wasgoing to be a big, big task. you could hear the tony in roddy chilleder's voice didn'tsound real positive. 15 to go, where will he cycle back out?>> i like what these crew chiefs are thinking. they know they can't make it on fuel. pitnow. hope the caution doesn't come out. get right side tires, you'll be the fastest caron the racetrack. start gaining the position back.>> where will they cycle back out on to the track?>> we saw kyle busch go by. he was on pit road just before the floor. let's listen into what the 19 of carl edwards had to say.
>> behind you, fuel.>> carl edwards, nine seconds behind brad keselowski.>> he said earlier now a hundred percent. if you're going to try to make it go as slowas you can but austin dillon behind you. but you slow down you're not going to catch keselowski.>> 17 hasn't been talking much on the radio until just moments ago.>> wlooep get to the front. >> calm as a cucumber. marty.>> doing the best he can. once he got behind matt kenseth, the car got extremely tightand it just won't go. kenseth is lugging that yellow line as west he can to take away theline for martin truex jr. he's so tight, these cars are screaming now.he's in third position trying to get back
in.>> he did a great job to gets up to third. once he got up to third he used a lot of hisequipment up getting there. >> yeah, he did. he's come from the back ofthe field. >> another car on pit road, austin dillonhas chosen to make his way on to pit road for fuel. dave.>> rick, after this run got started, i checked and he held up two hands, stay within tenlawns short and knew they would have to come down pit road. you use a whole lot of fuelalways. >> the cars get barely over four miles toa gallon. the they're not out there for fuel efficiency. but a lot of them are thinkingi wish this car was more fuel efficient.
>> there's a great difference between beingten laps short. that is a long way. >> the 78 who we thought was going to havebetter fuel mileage than everyone else is is now on pit road.>> they were hling martin truex in. taking the confirm active route here getting tiresand fuel to make it to the ejtd. >> if they can't make it on fuel, i like theidea of coming to pit road. they're just a little late. i people they needed to pit 10laps ago. le. >> can brad keselowski make it on fuel? ninelaps of racing to go. kenseth has closed the gap. carl edwards has been in fuel conservationmid-the long ellis. he is 10.7 seconds behind brad keselowski.>> if it comes down to the guys that pit -- now
we have the 42 on pit road. >> that would be kyle petty. no tires forkyle petty, just the fuel to get to the end. real quick on carl edwards. dave rogers saidstay in fuel saving mode. they think they're going to win this race.>> 2 and 20 are going to stick with it. they are on the track trying to win this race.martin truex closing the gap on kevin harvick. >> we have a fuel mileage race with keselowskiand matt kenseth. if they want make it on fuel, these two cars are the first two offpit road. >> they're also the first two one lap down.if the caution does come out kevin harvick is in the free pass and here comes kenz etd.kends earth makes the pass on keselowski.
harvick was in the pass position but it maynot matter. kenseth out in front. fuel save for the two, he either has an issue or he'ssaving fuel. kelli? >> whether they go into fuel savings modeor whether they come down at one point, it sounded like they were going to bit for freshtires and fuel. then brad said save, save, save, save. brad said on a scale of one toten, how much? they said ten. he said if i'm saving at ten, i've got to let matt kensethfind me. >> they have many conversations over the lastseveral laps whether or not they could make it. he broke did news to kejz etd that wecannot make it. there's no way. fuel only. >> back on the lead lap now. the 4 and the78. they have been able to get by brad keselowski
but they're a lap down. they're almost a fulllap behind the two. >> very simple. five laps, nine seconds. that'sthe advantage that brad keselowski has over carl edwards. you hear him right there, save, save, save.but did they wait too long? can you save enough now?>> i think potentially you can. edwards is nine seconds back. it doesn't matter -- unlessthey run out of fuel it doesn't matter that bush and these -- busch and those guys passhim. can you go slow enough without the 19 kwoochg you to win this race? jeff, remember-- >> you're saving gas.>> that's all that matters. how far behind
you is the car that you're trying to savemore fuel than. that's all that matters. the 19 team have been in this mode for about 20laps. they've been saving for a long time. they're in fuel save mode. they just toldcarl edwards to do so save fuel, save fuel. don't worry about the 2. they're convincedhe's going to run out. >> that's what everybody is banking on rightnow. the remaining two laps when he comes back around by the finish line. can he gothree miles? two laps is all he's got to do. brad keselowski, two wins already at kentucky.can he make it three? >> got the distance, four seconds now, soif he can cut that distance it's going to make brad have to run harder than he wantsto.

leading so many laps and winning charlotte.his working from the back to the front was amazing to watch.>> he passed more cars than -- i don't know -- 20-something cars in the closing laps.marty snider talked with martin. >> the highs and lows of this evening, martintruex, i want to start with the penalty from pit road. what's your intense and take onthat? >> does it matter? it's over. you know, ifeel like i didn't -- you get your time in line, you step on the gas and you head straighttowards your pit. so obviously, i turned left and came up next to the 4 car and passed him.as i did it i was driving to my pit, which guys do every week. i don't know why it wasdifferent today. i would think if they didn't
want us to do that anymore they would tellus in the drivers meeting. but, hell, i've been passed 15 times this year the same way.i guess when you're doing it for a win, it's different circumstances.>> it's something you'll address with nascar? >> oh, yeah.>> were you sthig this race is ours? because you had more fuel than everybody else.>> i didn't know everybody was going to make it. i didn't know where we were on fume. iwas just mad. head down, elbows up. just digging. it was a lot of fun out there tonight. hatsoff to kentucky speedway. i don't think we've ever seen a repave go that well. i think thetire dragging machine they brought here putting the work in made a lot of difference. cuedosto them. i think it's going to come in and
be a lot of fun in the future. one of the coolest repaves i think we've everdone. all in all, fun. fast car again. we only one p won one. in all all, it was a goodnight. >> they brought a very good car this evening.wound up finishing tenth. >> martin truex very strong but brad keselowskiis who we're talking to just outside victory lane. he's probably become the fourth memberof our team. >> i hope you like me here.>> how do you like me now? >> it's fitting that i had martin on. martinwas the best car all night. he didn't have that trouble at the end, i think he probablywould have won this pretty much hands down.
i feel like we kind of snuck one in here.i know these races, sometimes you have the best car and don't win and sometimes you don'thave the best car and execute. the ones you don't win you want to go home and kick something.i stole from the candy jar tonight. >> we're going to show the last two or threelaps here. i'm going to throw some numbers at you. truex were running 30, 40, the lastfive laps of the race. you're run flg the 30s. anywhere between 156 and -- or 149 and172. so is that how you save fuel? explain it to us. walk us through it.>> i saved fuel because it quit returning. the ease yesz way to save fuel. it ran outof gas on the last lap. i was in trouble, i was in a lot of trouble. i didn't thinki was going to make it back around. i started
it back up and lucky it fired up and i heldthe gas pedal down and it just lub lub lub lub, you now how a car does. we coasted back. you couldn't have timed it anymore perfectthan that, kym. we were pretty fortunate. >> did you have any idea? because you jumpedout and ran hard. you said that. good you have any idea that you could save enough fuelat the end of the track? >> no.>> could you have done that as the -- at the old track?>> i think the two tracks were similar. with 2007 kind of trial package that we had today, dale, it was a lot slower pace than what it probably should have been for a brand-newrepaved track and that lend a bunch for sure.
>> when you're on this last lap when you hadto go back to the gas, ok, and you had to make something happen, how much were you lookingout for fun and how much -- >> last week when the race was over my neckhurt. it took me about two or three days of neck soreness. today i would say the finishwas pretty similar. >> you won all that and you got this point.kyle and i were watching, you were struggling, my man.>> yeah. >> the 78 did everything but run over you.>> i know. >> you ran some laps about 149 miles an hourthere. i guess saving fuel wasn't that hard. >> you're exactly right. i was in troubleat the start of the race. they kept working
on it. thankfully when it came to nighttime, the car got better. my crew chief got me back in.>> i want to go back to last week was pure speed.>> it's cool. i'm watching the replay. >> he's watching himself.>> last week was pure speed. how do you manage these races this way? i mean, last week itwas all about getting out front. this week it was a totally different kind of race. betweenyour ears, how do you approach it? >> you go into these races knowing that everyone is different. when i tell people about our sport, i tell them, what do you watch?football? you look at those sports and the quarterback lines up every weekend. he playingthe same position. race car driver, it's completely
opposite of that. every week, the track'sdifferent. it's like the field being different. you play a different position every time.the next week like this week, your fuel mileage. it's like lining up at running back, tightend, quarterback. i'm at a different track every week. my god, it makes winning so specialand so tough. >> i don't know if we can find a better explanation.>> that was perfect. >> i think the only thing the wins are messingup is scarlet's sleep schedule. >> tonight's going to be real rough. it'sa good problem to have. winning problems. there's a hashtag for that.>> there you go. it's always nice to have your family in victory lane, no matter howlate it is. you're going to be in studio for
our show.>> yes. >> we'll think of something to talk aboutit. >> one mor race we're going to put your nameon the chair. >> let's make that a plan. i'm really lookingforward to new hampshire next week. not to get too far away from kentucky. but lookingat new hampshire, if you'd told me of the three races starting here with nbc's schedulewhich one i thought would be my best, i would have said new hampshire.>> if loudoun goes well, you can have the invitation to come back on.>> i hope we can do it again. >> thank you, man.>> the first four-time winner of 2016. i know

>> the kentucky colonel, that's for sure.these guys had a little momentum coming out of daytona when we looked at it. the roushteam did. and it carried over for greg. always been pretty good on a mile and a half racetrack.that's two races in a row for the roush organization and greg biffle they performed.>> greg biffle still trying to work into the top 16 in points or get a race win. tony stewartis 11th, he's in the chase. he also had a great night. the top five finish. he talkedwith our dave burns. >> so tony stewart follows up a sonoma winat top five very tricky kentucky speedway. scribe your evening.>> as long as you weren't around everybody it was great. but it's just hard. it's hardanytime they repave a track. it's easy for
us to blame goodyear. but i mean, they panickedwhen they did the test here and got blisters so they brought the hardest thing they had.it just kind of puts everybody in a spot. it puts them in a spot, too. none of us wantit to be like it was here. the more it ages the better it will get for everybody and you'llbe able to back off the hardness of the tire a little bit. i told my guys i thought, man,i'm not so sure goodyear hasn't figured out a niche in the nhl. they could freeze these things into big hockeypucks. but i'm proud of our roush center guys. we got in a mode there when we took two tiresat the end my car got really tight and i couldn't run the pace it needed to run. we immediatelywent into fuel-saving mode and figured that
was going to be our best bet and it workedout. >> good start ends in the top five.>> a fourth place finish for kurt busch. not just ordinary fourth place finish. with thishe's now finished top five at every track on the circuit. what's that mean to you?>> that's nice other than the cap it's special to race for good teams over the years thatgive me winning cars. top fives are special everywhere. as a driver it feels like yougot something at each of the places to be competitive to give to the team, to give feedback.and then the team can give better feedback to me on how we can win. today we persevered.i've never seen such an effort from everybody to dig deep and to just be back on their heelsthe whole time and then just start to lean
forward lean forward and then right at theend it turned into fuel mileage and our car came to us at the end. it's a perfect dayfor to us get a top five. and the way we had to sweat it all weekend.>> let's delve into that further. a backup car crash late in final practice yesterday.yet you you were able to rally today for a top five finish, save fuel at the end. howwould you describe this effort? >> it's tough to put into words other thanteamwork. we knew this would challenge our effort to see if we were championship worthy.to have a backup car so good on fuel mileage, thanks to monster energy and everybody thatputs their thumb and effort onto this 41 car. i'm very thankful for it.>> kurt busch is going to be a bit of a record.
this was his 14th straight top ten on themile and a half. the record is 16. you can see the celebration in victory lane thereas the pictures continue for the two teams. let's talk about what both kurt and tony hadto say.
